UBIQUITOUS AND ANNOYING DISCLAIMER: I don’t support Donald Trump. I’m not a Republican.
What They’re Saying:
The fine folks in the media – the same ones who completely blew it during the campaign and assured everyone that Hillary Clinton was leading in the polls and was going to be our newest president – they’re saying all sorts of stuff about former Breitbart executive chairman and Trump’s “chief strategist & senior counselor.”
“Bannon’s like another hateful propogandist, Nazi Joseph Goebbels” – Philadelphia Enquirer
“…not an anti-semite. But he is an anti-muslim, anti-women bigot.” – Haaretz
“Steve ‘turn on the hate’ Bannon in the white house.” NYT
“Steve Bannon’s cynicism spreads online.” USA Today
“…unabashed anti-semite…” Anti-defamation league
“white supremacist” – Vice
“…Bannon has a clear tie to white nationalists…” Glenn Beck!
“Okay, Bannon’s a verifiable piece of shit.” A guy I know named Colman
There’s nothing to worry about. He’s just another guy in politics.
The really ignorant take on things:
Republicans are horrible racists. This will be the end for anyone and everyone who isn’t an American white male.
The seemingly obvious take on things:
Steve Bannon was editor of Breitbart.Com – a site started by a Jewish man named Andrew Breitbart and Larry Solov. They came up with the plan for the site while in Israel. (Here’s a photo of them with Benjamin Netanyahu.)
Benjamin Shapiro, an Orthodox Jew, wrote for Breitbart.com (he left after a kerfuffle during Trump’s campaign) and has gone on record about Steve Bannon NOT being a white supremacist.
Milo Yiannopoulos is gay and Jewish (though he’s now catholic? someone explain, please) and is an editor at Breitbart.
There are plenty of women and minorities who have and do work with and for Breitbart.com.
They have a “Jerusalem” section.
The Contrarian take on things:
“You guys are way too serious…” Dave Marshak – Ski School
On The Other Hand:
“Fuck Trump. Any minority who works for Breitbart hates themselves.” Joe Strawman
There is a feeling that the media’s use of terms like racist, homophobe, transphobe, misogynist towards republican voters over the past 30+ years has backfired as those voters are NOT racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynist, cretins. So when the media called Trump (and now Bannon) those things, they do not stick. It’s the Boy Who Cried Wolf.
When you compare people you don’t like to truly evil people like Hitler, it trivializes Hitler. So if Steve Bannon and Donald Trump are Hitler, that means that Hitler was only as bad as Steve Bannon and Donald Trump. And come on… they’re not rounding up Jews, gays, gypsies and the handicapped and sending them off to die.
We need to be careful when we use harsh rhetoric against people we disagree with because when we encounter an actual racist, homophobic, transphobic, misogynist cretin, people need to believe it. Hitler didn’t consider Jewish people human. Their term was “Untermenschen” – “Subhuman.” I used to get on a friend because he called Hillary Clinton “Hitlery.” It minimizes the horror of Hitler and the actually subhuman things he and his people did to innocent people.
Hey, maybe Trump, Bannon and those guys are all that. But, I’ve been hearing those things being said about people I know and love for a long time and they aren’t true.
It’s politics – how about talking about their politics instead of personal attacks? Wouldn’t that be better?
Why Two Minutes of Hate?
It’s easy to imagine a mob of people screaming these things at the people they don’t like. Why? Because there’s actual video of it.
Yeah, they go on for much longer than the Two Minutes outlined in Orwell’s 1984, but I figured I’d be sloppy with the language, too. Everyone’s doing it.
